Intelligent Tariffs, Smart Prepayment & Master Troubleshooting

Understanding Intelligent Octopus

Our Intelligent Octopus family consists of smart tariffs designed to optimise low carbon technologies (LCT), shifting consumption to greener, lower-cost periods. This provides customers with lower costs and automated energy flexibility to help "balance the grid".

🚗 Intelligent Octopus Go

Smart tariff for EV owners charging at home. Optimises charging during the off-peak window (typically 23:30-05:30) at 7p/kWh.

🔋 Intelligent Octopus Flux

Designed for customers with solar panels and eligible batteries (GivEnergy, SolarEdge, Enphase, or Tesla Powerwall). Maximises profit by importing during low rates and exporting during peak.

Intelligent Octopus Go (IO Go)

How it Works

Intelligent Octopus Flux (IO Flux)

The 3-Part Charging Cycle

  1. Daytime: Charges from excess solar or the grid.
  2. Afternoon Discharge (4pm-7pm): Battery exports to the grid during the peak period to maximise high export rates.
  3. Overnight Top-up: Battery receives a small top-up while leaving room for solar the next day.

Smart Pay As You Go (SPAYG)

Smart Prepayment offers control over energy usage with our most affordable standard tariff.

Safety & Support:

  • Emergency Credit: £10 available on each meter for unexpected situations.
  • Friendly Credit: Available during weekends and evenings so supply isn't lost if credit runs out.
  • Priority Services: Customers with medical equipment should join the Priority Services Register (PSR) for extra support.

Troubleshooting Masterclass

Step 1: The Fact-Finding Mission

Always gather this info before escalating to help hubs:

  • Device make/model (Inverter, EV, or Charger).
  • Confirmation of latest app version and strong WiFi.
  • Smart meter status (must be sending half-hourly readings).
  • Screenshots of errors or charging notifications.

Step 2: Kraken Event Diagnostics

Expected Log Events

  • cloud-device-connected: Triggered when a car plugs in or a battery links.
  • smarter-tariff-optimisation-created: Charging schedule successfully built.
  • smarter-tariff-user-preferences-updated: Customer changed target SoC or ready-by time.

Error Log Events

  • cloud-device-failed-to-control: Check for 3rd party schedules, firmware updates, or unreachable assets.
  • telemetry out of date: (Flux) Too many requests sent; usually requires re-onboarding.
  • PLUGGED_IN:FAULT: Malfunction in cable lock, extreme temps, or charger system.

Device Specific Wisdom

  • Tesla: If the car is asleep, toggle Sentry Mode or drive the vehicle to wake it up.
  • Ohme: Octopus does not control the smart charging; Ohme controls the schedule in their app.
  • Zappi: Check for "Waiting for Surplus" or "Eco+" modes which interfere with control.
  • Hypervolt: If it appears offline, adjust LED brightness in app settings.
